Healthy Fall Produce

Each season brings its own unique harvest of deliciously sweet and heart healthy produce – there’s almost too much to choose from as we close out summer and slip into fall. Pick tomatoes for their ripe juicy goodness and the presence of lycopene, a beneficial anti-oxidant known to help prevent certain types of cancer and lower cholesterol.

The plum is particularly sweet this time of year, yet low in calories and free of saturated fats.  Plums contain beneficial compounds including dietary fiber and sorbitol and are high in Vitamin A, essential for healthy vision.  Be sure enjoy squashes as well – the butternut, acorn, spaghetti, and pumpkin varieties – great as side dishes, in soups and even in desserts.  As their color suggests, they are rich in carotene (again, warriors against cancer and heart disease) and a good source of Vitamin B1 and C, potassium and fiber.
